March For Democracy

Mourning in America

5th Anniversary of Citizens United v. FEC

On January 21st, 2015, the 5th Anniversary of the disastrous Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision which undermined our democracy by opening the floodgates to special interests, hundreds of activists and dozens of grassroots organizations from across the California are organizing to speak out, with one courageous voice, that we need to reverse this decision.

In just 5 years massive progress has been made across the country to fix this problem:

• 16 State Legislatures have called on the US Congress to pass a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United.

2 states resoundingly passed Voter Instructions calling for a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United.  (California's own Voter Instruction, Prop 49, was sued off the ballot by Big Money – the case will be heard in 2015 by the CA Supreme Court)

42 states have taken some sort of action declaring their desire to Overturn Citizens United.

The Democracy For All Act had a Senate majority YES vote, but fell just short of passing.

If we up the pressure we can achieve our goal to overturn Citizens United in the next 5 years.

4pm            Gather at Los Angeles City Hall Triforium (Main St & Temple St.)

4:30pm      March to the L.A. Chamber of Commerce (350 S. Bixel)

5pm            Speeches on the steps of the L.A. Chamber of Commerce

5:30pm      Teach-in at the Grantsmanship Center – Meeting Room (350 S. Bixel)

Join us to hear speakers share how this decision has affected working families and all the issues we care about, from mass incarceration, economic equality, the environment, to true healthcare reform.  Learn what is happening in California and beyond and see where we can plug in to help.  We’ll also see film clips explaining both the historic Powell Memo that led to this trajectory and the Citizens United Decision. We will end the teach-in with everyone writing a letter to the CA Supreme Court to demand Prop 49, the voter advisory to overturn Citizens United, be put on the 2016 ballot.

To make this more fun we will also have a Dia de Los Muertos style funeral procession – as the Citizens United decision led to the death of our democracy.  Marchers will wear black armbands and carry candles and signs down the streets of downtown LA, accompanied by a musical procession.  As we cross the 110 we’ll do a banner drop. Together, we will restore our democracy!
